It seems just since president Obama has been sworn in, the teachers at my daughter's school, Benton Junior High School (Benton, AR) have decided they can teach anything they want. I will first commend her civics teacher who is a liberal but encourages all viewpoints and commends my daughter when she makes a good point. My concern is her English teacher and her science teacher. The English teacher has given them the assignment of reading the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser which is not just about the evils of fast food but uses that industry and others to preach against the evils of the free-market system. She is using every opportunity to preach to the kids in ENGLISH class. Here is a sample of a writing assignment she has given them: "Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie foods through toys and cute corporate mascots? Is it possible that fast food companies--like tobacco companies--are recruiting increasingly younger consumers in order to insure a steady customer base as their older constituents die from heart disease, diabetes, and other obesity-related disorders?" Now I think this is a question worthy of discussion but not in an English class. It is not being discussed anyway, the book and its message are being pushed down the kids throats. I am sure this same teacher has no problem with promiscuous sex and homosexuality being pushed on our kids my the entertainment industry. Even so I don't think it is a topic I need my child's English teacher to address.
