It seems just since president Obama has been sworn in, the teachers at my daughter's school, Benton Junior High School (Benton, AR) have decided they can teach anything they want. I will first commend her civics teacher who is a liberal but encourages all viewpoints and commends my daughter when she makes a good point. My concern is her English teacher and her science teacher. The English teacher has given them the assignment of reading the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser which is not just about the evils of fast food but uses that industry and others to preach against the evils of the free-market system. She is using every opportunity to preach to the kids in ENGLISH class. Here is a sample of a writing assignment she has given them: "Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie foods through toys and cute corporate mascots? Is it possible that fast food companies--like tobacco companies--are recruiting increasingly younger consumers in order to insure a steady customer base as their older constituents die from heart disease, diabetes, and other obesity-related disorders?" Now I think this is a question worthy of discussion but not in an English class. It is not being discussed anyway, the book and its message are being pushed down the kids throats. I am sure this same teacher has no problem with promiscuous sex and homosexuality being pushed on our kids my the entertainment industry. Even so I don't think it is a topic I need my child's English teacher to address.

For one thing, she is asking leading questions - not truly encouraging debate.
well, sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire.. In high school I had a real pinko commie in US History II as a teacher.. all we ever did in class was he would tell me how great jimmy carter was and I would stand up to him and tell him how great ronald reagan was... anyway,,.

If it were *me* I would write a scathing defense of the fast food industry to advertise however and to whomever they wanted to. And that it is a matter of Caveat Emptor or let the buyer beware.. Nobody forces anybody to put mcdonalds into their mouths.. In fact I had some today.. first time in a few weeks..

Oh boy sometimes do I wish I was in school now with all the information available to kids on the internet.. I would be the bane of a****** teachers like this.
Yea, the best thing to do is arm your children with knowledge, the ability to seek knowledge, and to be discerning - even in school. Teach them to never stop questioning.
I believe Liberal Ideology is a form of religion, and if Christianity can not be taught in or schools this should also be out. It would be one thing if the teachers were teaching politics in a non partisan approach. The simple fact are they don't teach politics at all. Most of our children have no idea what the working parts of the government are and how the were started. All they learn is how can we keep the earth green and feed all the lazy liberal pot smokers of the world that don't want to get off their asses to wipe.
Well thank you for all replies and suggestions. I am going to set up a meeting with the principal and the teacher. This really makes me want to pull them out of the public school.

This is exactly why I homeschool my children. Until that gets outlawed...
My children were homeschooled as well until we lost my wife to cancer in 2006. I simply cannot do it and work too. She was so passionate about it. I am looking into a christian school but I may have to get a job there to get them in that way!
Not all public schools are bad. Do you research and make sure you take control of your child's education. The key is to stand up and get noticed - I'm sure you'll find other parents who will support your point of view. That can be a powerful force.
