Arizona officers fight AGAINST a concealed gun issue which
allows concealed weapons without permit
The proposal which is scheduled to be heard FRIDAY JUNE 19 in the AZ Senate Judiciary Committee has sparked a debate over what restrictions should be placed on gun owners who wish to carry weapons in public buildings, schools and other places.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? With the way the world is going should ALL citizens carry a weapon without a permit and carry it into public buildings like libraries, stores or anywhere?
HAVE WE COME BACK TO THE WILD WILD WEST?
Opponents said the bill would endanger law-enforcement officers and the public by eliminating permits and the training courses now required to obtain them.
DO YOU THINK TRAINING IS NECESSARY?
"This bill would make a radical and very dangerous change to state law," Attorney General Terry Goddard said at a Thursday news conference. "The current law in Arizona is not broken. It has worked exceptionally well."
REALLY? Then why is there shootings weekly of innocent people who can not defend themselves. Its the old adage.... if the NWO is prime to come take us over then who do you want to have a weapon?
To receive a concealed-carry permit today, gun owners have to take an eight-hour course on gun laws and safety and pass a shooting test. The course costs about $100. About 125,000 Arizonans have obtained the $60 permit since the concealed-carry law was established in 1994.
So basically the state makes thousands of dollars on permit fees that were not necessary before 1994 - HOW EVER DID WE SURVIVE WITHOUT THE PERMIT? lol
Senate Bill 1270, sponsored by Sen. Sylvia Allen, would make the safety course optional.
Supporters of the bill say existing concealed-carry laws are confusing and can lead to unfair prosecution. A woman could be arrested for a concealed-carry violation if she was driving in her car and inadvertently placed a newspaper on top of a gun in the passenger's seat, they say.
THIS HAS HAPPENED TO A FORMER VET THAT I KNOW = AND HE NOW HAS A RECORD - WHICH MAKES SECURITY JOBS UNAVAILABLE TO HIM. IS THAT FAIR?
Gun owners who want to untuck their shirts to conceal a weapon when they walk into a store shouldn't have to take a training course, said John Wentling, vice president of the Arizona Citizens Defense League.
"Do you need a permit to untuck your shirt? Do you need training to untuck your shirt?" Wentling said. "It's just too subjective."
Police chiefs around the state have objected to the proposal, saying it would heighten tensions between officers and the community.
WHAT A LIE = WHAT? DID THEY ALL FEAR CITIZENS BEFORE 1994?
By increasing the number of gun owners who have not received safety training, it could increase the potential for tragic accidents, they said.
But Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he would support the bill, saying carriers of concealed weapons should not face permit requirements when people who carry their weapons openly do not.
"A gun is a gun, whether it's concealed or not," Arpaio said.
If passed, Arizona would become the third state to allow gun owners to carry concealed weapons without a permit, after Alaska and Vermont. Of states that allow concealed weapons, 39 require a permit or training, according to the Attorney General's Office.
Allen, the bill's sponsor, said critics of the bill have overreacted. Violent crime will decrease if the bill passes, she said.
"Law enforcement is never in support of citizens protecting themselves," said Allen, R-Snowflake. "Why do we have to pass a law that says, 'This is the only way you're going to protect yourself'? . . . It's a God-given, constitutional right that you have."
Personally I came up with gun people (retired military) and over the years guns have become very obscure to many. The only right way to allow a person to have or carry a gun is a competency test and if they can pass that they should be allowed to do what ever they want with there weapons. The only reason I say we should have that test is because there are so many stupid people in this world that are scary. The reason I say stupid people is because there are a lot of dumb people who carry guns but there not stupid enough to use it inappropriately. I would never let Obama carry a gun and he’s not stupid but he’s dumb enough to use it inappropriately, This is a very rare case and why did the USA get stuck with it!
In PA there is no training course or anything else necessary to obtain a concealed carry permit. If you aren't a convicted felon or (theoretically) insane, you can get a permit.
And really, crazy people and felons are going to carry guns without permits, so why shouldn't the rest of us be able to defend ourselves? These safety courses and etc are just a money-making gadget and a way to discourage people from exercising their God-given right to self defense.
I'm all for firearms safety training, but whatever you do, make sure your state does not become like "the peoples' Republic of Massachusetts". The gun control laws here allow your local police chief to deny a license to carry, or restrict a license, as he sees fit. He does not even have give a reason for a refusal. This is all part of the gun control act of 1998. Interestingly enough, it was signed into law by then Governor Paul Cellucci, a republican.
When applying, a police chief can demand letters of recommendation, (some demand two, some demand more.) and make an applicant take a range test, even though said applicant has already taken one to pass their mandated safety course. Hang on, this gets better: Some chiefs are demanding a letter from a doctor, attesting to your fitness. Needless to say, doctors are reluctant to provide such a letter, for liability reasons. All of this may be confirmed at a website called northeastshooters.com.
If you are refused a license to carry, you have two legal recourses: You may file an appeal, or you may simply move to another town and try again. Northeastshooters.com has a map of the state, with towns color coded as to how difficult it is to get a license. Some have simply had enough, and have moved up to New Hampshire, Maine, or Vermont.
According the gun owners' action league, (goal.org) the number of licensed gun owners in this state has plummeted, but the amount of violent gun crime has increased, since this bill became law. Anyone surprised?
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino likes to blame gun violence on our three neighbor states to the north, due to their much more reasonable gun laws. But isn't it funny that those three states (Maine, NH, and VT) have so much less gun crime than MA, with it's ultra liberal state gun control laws?
Fun time waster: do a google search on "Menino Blames".
I think a gun owner's responsibility class and some gun range time should be required for a permit. I grew up around and had the opportunity to shoot guns. Most women have not.
I don't want a first time driver out on the road w/me, either. If you don't know which one is the "safety" and which one is the "brake" you put a lot of others in jeopardy as well as yourself.
