On TCUnation, the news, radio, and websites there is a lot of talk about the speech Obama will give to students in the public school system on September 8th.

Some school systems have actually elected not to show the speech, others such as mine here in Florida will have alternate activity for those students whose parents would rather them not watch the speech.

What is your school system doing? Are you going or would you let your children watch the speech?

I think something on the order of Bush would be fine, but filling out papers fo questions is out of line.
I think what he's doing is awfully Hitleresque and if I had kids, I would definitely take them out of school that day. In addition, I'd probably look for other means of education instead of public schools.
He must think we are sheep and we will follow?? NO he should leave our children ALONE!!!!!
The man is an idiot and needs to be IMPEACHED asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha ha ha good one, let's do it now before things get worse :)
Rebecca my thoughts exactly. God help this country.
We live in Houston, within the Cy-Fair ISD. The principals of each school were allowed to make the decision of whether they would show the speech or not. Our district also chose to show it the day after. We received an email from our principal informing us the speech would be shown during the social studies period and that those choosing not to participate would be put in another room with no alternate activity planned.

My husband, Bill, called up to the school and asked if the children were going to just be sat in a room to stare at the wall for the duration, as if they were being punished, and also asked if they were going to be sending a note home so the parents could opt in or out. In the first case he was informed that the children could work on their regular work (while everyone else is cheering the chosen one) and in the second case, no, there would be not type of letter sent home. So for parents with no internet, or don't check their mail I guess their kids will be watching whether they want them to or not.

I am seriously considering pulling my children out for the day, or at least for the social studies period.
Politics has no place in the schools. This man just keeps crossing the line and he needs to be stopped. People standing up and sticking to their guns where this speech is concerned is a good start. I am hoping, probably in vane, that people will scream loud enough that quite possibly the Whitehouse will seriously reconsider their decision of airing the speech during school hours.
Speaking only for myself and my children... I dont have a problem with a president trying to encourage our students to stay in school. Now that being said I don't think it needs a lesson plan to accompany it- nor a creepy speech which without my permission as a parent to show this speech to my children without me knowing exactly what it is going to say or what the instructor will skew the speech to accomplish. I had to call my childrens school to ask if they were going to show the speech and was told they left it up to the teachers. I then emailed all of the youngest sons teachers to find out if indeed they were going to view it and was told yes they were going to view it. I asked if I could excuse my child if need be. .. as was told sure. I appreciate that. I think that if you are going to show something like that with an obvious agenda you need to include the parents... I have had my fill of helping my children with their homework and seeing textbooks skewed one view and not an equal one... or the teacher that reprimanded my child for being a young republican. I think that as for my family we have sacrificed and at times made the ultimate sacrifice ( my uncle was a POW) and if my child's teacher wants to have an opinion fine.. but as for doing other than showing both sides as a teacher should do- then NO she is out of bounds. Journalists and teachers should remember that their job is to show the facts not impart their views. Again, this is not because I don't want my children informed but I want to watch it with my children and discuss what we think as a family.
My school was notified this afternoon that we'll be excpected to show it. I will be taking a mental health day Tuesday, because I refuse to show it.
I don't know you, Maria, but I'm proud of you for that decision.
The letters should be written to your parents they will be with you long then 4 yrs and they care with all their hearts what you have to say
Finally a teacher who has class, be proud of yourself. We need more people like you.
I'm a conservative; registered rep. Obama's administration scares me.
But he, unfortunately, is The President of the US. Denying the Office of the President the right to speak to american citizens is wrong. Debating what he says is free speech. I believe you should rethink your mental health day. Someone else will play it to your students anyway. I want my children to see it and pray that someone, who is willing to discuss all sides of the issues, like you, shows it.
In honesty I think the outcry has already changed the content of the speech. If he is smart, he'll come out with a benign "work hard, listen to your parent, stay in school" type message in efforts to make those that have protested look more extreme.
Good luck!
