"Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the police officer who arrested him will meet with President Barack Obama at the White House at 6 p.m. Thursday, a senior administration official said."

My thought: go ahead and say he'll go ... but what's the point, really? And why does this seem like some kind of set up? I think either way, Crowley will be the one judged and criticized on how he handles this "invitation". Obama is playing a game and it disappoints me. He'd rather crush Crowley than admit that maybe a man in his position shouldn't have said what he said at the press conference. But then there's speculation he had that question planted in the first place to create a distraction away from the flaws in his health plan.
Observation: I notice that the world on the whole is always keeping watchful eye on the US and tracking the news headlines, and this particular headline comes across as childish and "stupid".
So much for prestige and honor!

NO! If he does, I think that Obama will just use it as an excuse to lecture him about how to treat "all" Americans as he would want to be treated and blah blah. That officer was just doing his job. I would not expect him to do anything differently. I realize that it should be an "honor" to meet the President BUT...I don't think this would be. I think he would be treated as an "ignorant whitey" who doesn't know how to approach a professor of color and treat him well. The whole thing would be a tragic mess.

No, I would not meet for a beer. It would only serve to give the media more chance to make more publicity for a president who has done one thing after another in a bad way and will only serve to give the media a chance to brag about how great Obama must be that even after all that has happened Sgt Crowley forgave him as seen by them having a drink together. let Obama get his publicity elsewhere at someone else s expense.

From the comments of Gates and Obama on the subject, it appears to me that they still believe that Officer Crowley was the one who acted wrong. This offer is just a way to get officer Crowley in a situation where they can attempt to make him look bad. On the other hand, if he doesn't go, they will say, "see, he is a racist, he won't come and have a drink with two black men". I guess he is probably damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

i think this is the dumbest thing ever, the policeman did his job, point end of discussion does the president have so much time on his hand so he can invite people to spend some leasure time on our money? how about working and stop showing his face every 5 minutes on tv. we know he is somewhat charismatic now LET HIM DO SOMETHING OF VALUE TO US

No! This would be a way for both this Liberal Hack of a Professor and the POTUS todouble team this Sgt. I cannot believe that POTUS has not applogised to the Cambridge P.D. or to Sgt. Crowley yet. This Professor is guilty of the Racial Profiling, not the cop!
