Romney's intention is to stay on message and talk about the economy, the debt, and unemployment. Obama's intention is to get and keep Romney off message. Hello? Anybody home? The Reid thing is a trial balloon, and the latest Obama PAC ad with comments from a husband whose wife died of stage 4 cancer, which the husband uses to bludgeon Romney, is a test balloon. Stage 4 lung cancer has a 5-year mortality rate of 98% and pancreatic is not much better. It is, in fact, a death sentence and the outcome has nothing to do with Romney. Bad lies are bad enough but the lies are just stupid. Nonetheless, you gotta connect the dots for the Public.

Disinformation, lies, innuendo will be at the center of the Obama campaign and probing to find an effective communication strategy is a priority to get Romney talking defensively about anything except the State-of-the-Union in the swing states, in particular. Thus, the impending Blitzkrieg. A Goebbels delight.

The V.P. pick of whomever will be another focus for smear tactics but one could expect the V.P. pick will be squeaky clean, even if as boring as a librarian with lockjaw, and unless the V.P. candidate is revealed to be a cross dresser, he is unlikely to get nearly as much attention as Mitt. Of course, it would be nice for Obama to have a V.P. who is a petty thief to pick on, and on, and on (Rubio), as left wing media will play the Blitzkrieg game like a violin.

Sad to say, Romney is not handling this well. Put up or shut is hardly the best response to the Reid balloon. Rather, look Presidential. Mitt's Press Secretary could say:

"Mr Romney has received no correspondence from the IRS regarding a tax-related issue and the burden of proof is clearly on Reid. One could also claim that the moon is made out of green cheese but where does the burden of proof lay?"

OR, "The only correspondence Mr. Romney has received from the IRS in the past 10 years is routine and inconsequential, and it is patently obvious that failure to pay taxes would inevitably lead to relentless correspondence from IRS to him, or anyone else, until such time that taxes are paid. There is no IRS correspondence for the obvious reason that the allegation is patently false.

OR, "If Mr. Romney had not paid taxes surely you would know about that because the IRS reports to Treasury and who do you think controls both agencies? You haven't heard a peep from the Obama administration and you won't, for obvious reason."

OR, "Mr. Romney has a preparer to do his taxes because the IRS code is so complex, as does IRS Commissioner Donald Shulman, and you can talk to Mr. Romney's preparer who will say that he has not received any correspondence from IRS that would suggest a modicum of truth to what Harry Reid says."

ETC.

It is not enough to deny in a flippant way. The dots have to be connected for the dummies.

I agree with what you are saying. However,  I think what Wayne Allen Root had to say in the last day or two had some effect.
