Who would Be a good conservative President??

Mitt Romney would be a good President...But I'm sure there is someone more conservative than him...He would be the President of the United states of Commerce...and that would be it...he could get the Economy going...But I don't think that would be enuf...

I know we have some really big Romney fans in here, but I would have to agree with your assessment of him - he's not very Conservative, and his strengths are more in line with running executive board meetings than actually leading a country by setting the example, tone, tenor, and direction for others to follow. I don't see Romney having the Reagan-like ability to lead by personal example and purpose of direction without looking at opinion polls or taking a board vote to flow with the fickle whims of a 51% majority - and his record in Massachusetts calls into question his ability to lead and unite (but I do see him maybe running our Department of Commerce).

I too agree that Mitt Romney would be a great conservative president. I say that not only as a conservtive American, but I say it as a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints member. I know what is in his heart. Remember, he became governor in one of the most liberal states, MA.

Therefore, he may have approached his Right to LIfe issue differently, than in a conservative state. But when he says that every bill tha came across his desk that involved abortion, he came down on the right to life side every time.So when someone say that his record was not very impressive as not taken an indepth look at his record. I agree that he is not Reagan, but he is not trying to be. There is know one out there that is. However, he holds his conservative values and is the closest one to Reagan out there, at this time. If he was selfish, he would have stayed in the race in 08, but he showed grace and dignity, unlike Huckabee!

I'm sorry, but his affiliation with the LDS church is the main reason I could not support him. My family are non-LDS and we live in an area heavily populated by the LDS church. Our neighbors have treated us horribly because we do not belong to the ward. People will not speak to us and maker it hard to do business. We are under constant pressure to join the ward, and God forbid we bring up the fact that we are Catholic. We might as well have leprosy. You can not judge the virtues of a man based upon his religion, you have no way of knowing what is truly in his heart.

My problem with Romney isn't that he's a member of the LDS church, but that he told a series of big lies about that faith when he decided it was necessary to speak out against his critics. If he, like any Temple Mormon, would tell the truth about the LDS (mainly the fact that it isn't actually Christian), I wouldn't have a problem with it or with him. If he weren't a Temple Mormon, but rather was one of the millions of Mormons who don't actually know or understand the Truth, that would be another thing. But as a Temple Mormon, Romney knows the truth but chose to lie about it. Right then and there, his integrity rating dropped to zero.

That's on top of the fact that he's a newcomer to conservatism, and doesn't really quite get it.

Gary, I take offense at your comment. I, too, am a "Temple" Mormon. Your assertion that my faith is not really Christian is just plain false. The name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for crying out loud. For anyone to assert that my church is not Christian is a blatant, uninformed lie. I don't know where you got your info from but I would suggest this. If you wanted to know what it was like to drive a stock car going 200mph, would you ask one of the Nascar drivers or one of the fans up in the stands eating a hot dog and drinking a beer? One is far more credible than the other. Please feel free to ask me any question in a different forum about this issue and I will be more than happy to answer.

Yes, let's be clear about Ron Paul and examine his beliefs and record a little more closely before you make "blanket" statements that are not all together true. Ron Paul, for example, has never supported legalizing drugs for recreational use but genuine medical use. There is a difference here. While he is personally against any form of recreational drug use, government legislation against drugs really has not stopped the problem because people want it and will get it anyway they can - even if it means doing so violently and illegally. But this is a topic for another forum!

And, like it or not, it is not the Government's place to regulate every facet of our private lives. The Constitution does not give either the Federal Government or the State governments blanket authority to violate the "sovereign rights" of any citizen in this country. And there are issues of personal rights that do not fall under the realm of government regulation. Like it or not, and I personally do not, we cannot legislate away all sins and vices under our constitutional form of government and remain true to the Constitution. This is Ron Paul's record, and he has been very consistent about it over his years in Congress - which is certainly better than most members in Congress can say.

And while some folks may have "shunned" Romney on his religious affiliations (which is their right and freedom to freely do so, if they so choose), have you not shunned Ron Paul on his "libertarian" leanings for merely supporting and upholding individual "sovereign" rights from abuse and regulation by Big Government? It would seem so from your arguments.

No one here expects you to change your opinions on Paul and Romney, but, in the same vein, you aren't likely to change other folks opinions on them either. So why banter and argue over it? To each their own!

Just to be clear with Dave, I am not knocking Romney just to push Paul - and I have never tried to twist Romney's record on anything!

There is a difference between supporting your candidate and knocking other folks for making a different choice, as Dave is beginning to do. As I said before - to each their own, but distorting one candidate's record just to make your own candidate look better is out of place here -- so calm down, Dave. And don't try to pick fights with people and set them straight merely for having an opinion other than your own. Now, let the discussion move forward . . .

I agree with Jim Robinson about his stand on drugs except I don't believe in legalizing it. I believe in "de-criminalizing" it.
Legalizing it is what California did with the medical use of marijuana law! See what can of worms California has injected into society when they did that. Humbolt County, especially Arcata, has a mess on their hands. Crime has escalated. Homes being ruined by renters paying large inflated prices and then start gardening in them, making being able to rent a two bedroom apartment for less the $900 a month impossible, then ruining them with hot lights and humid conditions raising pot, then drug raids by competing drug producers and just making a generally a mess out of what was once a very nice place.
With legalizing it, the state gets to say who can, and who can not do something. De-criminalizing it, anyone and everyone can grow a plant for their own use. Once that is accomplished there is little reason to violently 'rip someone else off.'
I dislike cocain users. They fill my mouth with bile! But government regulation of marijuana needs be no more the most all law that regulates the use of alcohol.
