NY voting machine glitches a primary problem

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 08:57 AM PDT
BETHLEHEM -- New voting machines the state plans to use in every voting district next year malfunctioned at polling sites in Bethlehem and Colonie, according to the Albany County Board of Elections. Board of Elections training specialist Joshua Rutnick said the problems were quickly fixed, but they were similar to issues the state and the manufacturer of the machines thought had already been fixed. Some voters at the First United Methodist Church on Kenwood Avenue were forced to vote on paper ballots that elections workers later fed into the voting machine. GOP senator wants investigation of ACORN

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 05:04 AM PDT
WASHINGTON -- A Republican lawmaker on Tuesday urged the Justice Department to investigate ACORN, a community organization under fire for several voter-registration fraud cases.Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., wrote Attorney General Eric Holder requesting the investigation. He cited reports that ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, may "have been engaged in illegal activity" by aiding and abetting tax evasion, prostitution, human trafficking, fraud and conspiracy. The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN following a measure introduced by Johanns. The Nebraska lawmaker said the organization has received more than $50 million in taxpayer funds since 1994.Continue reading here: http://www.thesunnews.com/news/breaking_news/story/1070978.html

Shake The Tree, ACORNs Fall

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 05:02 AM PDT
Democrats have the White House, Senate and House, but when it comes to defending left-wing community group ACORN, conservatives have their rivals on their heels.ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) has been in the sights of many conservative journalists and political activists since at least last year's presidential campaign. With Barack Obama championing his community organizing background, it made sense that the leading organization in that field would fall under scrutiny. But conservative hostility toward ACORN has been existent for years. The group itself has had a strong presence in big cities for some time. In New York, its labor-movement founders created a pseudo third-party that has come under suspicion recently for appearing to skirt campaign finance laws. Last year, allegations of voter fraud were brought against ACORN in several states.Continue reading here: http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/Shake-The-Tree-ACORNS-Fall-...

ABC's Gibson: ACORN Scandal a Mystery to Me

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:59 AM PDT
Is the ACORN scandal worthy of national broadcast news coverage? ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson said he didn't even know what the scandal was about. The story has escalated in the past week as hidden-camera videoshave been released showing workers at separate offices of ACORN — a nation community outreach group that receives millions in federal funding — appearing to advise a couple dressed as a pimp and prostitute how to skirt the law and set up a brothel. But Gibson told a radio show Tuesday morning that he wasn't familiar with the story — and it might be "just one you leave to the cables."Continue reading here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,550605,00.html

Senator Burris, Durbin among 7 to vote to continue ACORN Funding

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:55 AM PDT
In a bi-partisan vote of 83--7 yesterday, the U.S. Senate cut off federal funding to ACORN within the HUD/Transportation appropriation. The move by the Senate follow more than 15 years of ongoing allegations of corruption stemming from misappropriation of federal funds to voter fraud associated with the organization. Such allegations have boiled over in recent days as Independent filmmakers have released a series of four (so far) videos taken at different locations in which ACORN workers engaged in acts ranging from violating HUD regulations to advising the filmmaker on how to claim a group of underage, trafficked prostitutes as dependents on his taxes. ACORN has received over $53 million in federal funding over the past 14 years and would be eligible to apply for up too $8.5 billion of stimulus money set aside for such community organizations. The Senate vote provides an important first step in cutting off federal money to the organization but grant opportunities still remain available through multiple agencies not covered under Tuesday's vote. Among the 7 Senators voting to continue the funding of ACORN were both Senators from Illinois, Roland Burris and Richard Durbin. The votes of Senators Durbin and Burris on Tuesday are representative of...

Conservatives Draw Blood From Acorn, Favored Foe

WASHINGTON — For months during last year’s presidential race, conservatives sought to tar the Obama campaign with accusations of voter fraud and other transgressions by the national community organizing group Acorn, which had done some work for the campaign. The latest on President Obama, the new administration and other news from Washington and around the nation. Join the discussion.More Politics NewsBut it took amateur actors, posing as a prostitute and a pimp and recorded on hidden cameras in visits to Acorn offices, to send government officials scrambling in recent days to sever ties with the organization.Conservative advocates and broadcasters were gleeful about the success of the tactics in exposing Acorn workers, who appeared to blithely encourage prostitution and tax evasion. It was, in effect, the latest scalp claimed by those on the right who have made no secret of their hope to weaken the Obama administration by attacking allies and appointees they view as leftist.Continue reading here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/16/us/politics/16acorn.html?hp
