Dear Mr. President:
I am quite certain that some employee will intercept this and it is very unlikely that it will ever reach your eyes. However, I have sent it anyway in the hope that its message will somehow be conveyed. I am sending a copy to several media outlets as well.
I am disappointed, no, make that dismayed, by the direction you are taking this great country. It is wrong and the direct opposite of most American values.
I am retired and trying to live on a modest fixed income while rebuilding our very old and tiny house in rural Louisiana. Last year, I saw my life savings shrink by more than half in the market meltdown. While you were not responsible for that loss, many of the same politicians who support you today were instrumental in forming and promoting the high-risk housing policies that, along with energy prices, led to that meltdown. We all know that it was not caused by the Bush administration’s tax cuts or other economic policies regardless of your claims to the contrary. The housing troubles were conceived during the Carter years and gestated during the Clinton administration. George W. Bush’s failure was in not stopping them before disaster struck, although he did make a modest effort to do so.
The so-called “Wall Street greed” that you decry was created in large part by Washington politicians, including many Democrats, who pushed those very policies onto the banking system all while participating in “sweetheart” mortgage deals themselves. Yet they are not being held accountable by you or anyone else. In fact, charlatans like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd deny any responsibility.
Sadly, since your inauguration, you have done little but drastically increase the country’s debt and undermine our entire economic system. Every policy seems designed to increase the government’s power and control over us, the people, while usurping our most basic freedoms. The Constitution has been largely ignored and appears to be held in contempt by both your office and Congress. Major corporations are now partly or primarily controlled by your administration, CEOs hired and fired, compensation dictated, and your actions indicate that you relish that control in spite of public statements to the contrary.
Every single policy you have implemented or are trying to implement is exactly the wrong policy for a free, strong nation, and you know it. Hugely increased government with hugely increased costs and a debt that can never be repaid will be your legacy.
A few far less expensive things could have been done to “stimulate” the economy like drastically cutting business tax rates and eliminating the capital gains tax. Those sensible stimulations were ignored because they did not further the goal of increasing government power, yet these “business friendly” tactics could have saved many, many jobs while shortening the recession. But let us face facts. Shortening the recession may not your biggest concern. After all, the worse things become, the greater your excuse to take more and more “corrective” control.
Now you are celebrating the passage of a “cap-and-trade” tax bill that will cost more jobs and do nothing, absolutely nothing, to help the climate or the environment. I sent you a very responsible and realistic Energy Plan in April that would have eliminated our need for foreign oil, reduced oil consumption overall, greatly helped the environment by reducing CO2 (and other emissions), all while reducing costs for consumers, and with little government cost. No new technology was required. In fact, we could have achieved an abundant, cleaner energy supply with stable domestic energy prices for years to come. Instead, you chose to continue pushing a horribly expensive, insane energy policy including “cap-and-trade”. Why? Likely because a sensible plan requires little government intervention or control and, therefore does not increase your power.
On healthcare, you talk of the need to save money yet you oppose the first thing that should be done to truly reduce costs; Tort Reform. The only reason is to reward one of your biggest campaign contributors and a special interest group, the trial lawyers. You never explain how spending a trillion dollars or more on “healthcare reform” will save money. It does not make sense how spending money saves money, especially when government is involved. We have seen public housing and are not interested in public healthcare. I personally will campaign against any such “reform” unless I understand all of the “small print”, including all costs and who will pay those costs.
I have never been an activist of any kind, not in my entire life. I do not wish to be. I would rather just be working on my old house and visiting my grandkids occasionally. But now I find myself attending Tea Parties, attending other events protesting government policies, writing news media, and even writing the President. I am becoming an activist only to prevent the destruction of my country. I vow to learn the names of every politician who supported the stupid “cap-and-trade” bill and actively campaign for their defeat in the next election.
During this time, most of the media has generally given you a free pass. I suspect that is for three reasons. Many in the media are quite liberal and favor your programs. Others are likely fearful of retribution from your office were they to appear unfavorable while still others are terrified of being labeled “racist” should they object. Thankfully, your “honeymoon” with the press is finally showing signs of erosion. One can only hope.
I suffer none of those fears.
Based on what I see, I have concluded that you personally hate America. That you are an angry radical from the late 1960’s mold who wants to see The United States of America either destroyed or completely transformed into a different nation. You obviously have little regard for our Constitution. It appears that you would prefer we become a European style socialist state even though most of Europe’s economies have been relatively stagnant for decades and socialism has failed everywhere it was attempted. You cater to special interests while ignoring the will of the people. It will eventually cause your downfall and will drag your party down with you.
You have expressed interest in “spreading wealth”, presumably helping the poor. I believe that no able-bodied citizen in this nation needs to be poor. Everyone has access to a decent education, all are capable of working hard, and all should be capable of avoiding bad choices while making good ones. If one is truly interested in helping eradicate poverty, one would promote teaching from a very early age the need for hard work, the need for a good education, and the need for making good choices in life. In other words, most of our nation’s poor have chosen to be that way through ignorance or laziness. They are not victims of someone else’s greed. They are victims only of politicians who prey on their vulnerabilities and convince them that their poverty is someone else’s fault. Politicians who tell them that not only is there a free lunch, that they deserve it. Far greater men than I have said that you cannot lift someone up by pulling someone else down. They were and still are right. An indication of your hypocrisy is the fact that in spite of my modest income, my wife and I donate roughly 12% of that income each year to our church and worthwhile charities. Compare that to the level of your annual donations.
And now, you state that you want our judicial system to be influenced not by law, but by “empathy”. I can only presume that you mean that justice should no longer be blind, but should instead be dispensed unequally depending on who is affected by the outcome.
You apparently still favor slavery since you want a large segment of the country to be dependent on the government which puts them in bondage to that government. While I
prefer teaching people how not to be poor and how to achieve the American Dream, you and your ilk prefer to keep them as minions under your benevolent care (a.k.a. domination). Apparently, class warfare rewards your political goals even though it sacrifices real people. Power truly does corrupt, sir. Your administration is ample proof.
If I’m wrong, please prove it with something other than just words. We have heard you talk from both sides of your mouth too often. Since we cannot trust what you say, we must judge by what you do.
I would like you to understand that a very large number of people in this country oppose what you are doing and will do everything possible to see that you fail to lead us to destruction. I for one will die before I become dependent on you or your government. You are well on your way, in just 6 short months, to becoming the worst President in American history. You are proving yourself to be a truly evil man, and I do not use that term lightly.
You have a gift for public speaking and are, indeed, a silver-tongued devil. That has kept your personal poll numbers fairly high so far. “You can fool all of the people some of the time.” But support for your policies is slipping quickly and your personal favor will soon follow.
Please consider these words. You had great potential and could have done great things, if only you had the character, the staff, and the policies to go with it. Corrupt Chicago-style politics with a radical left-wing agenda will not work for long at the national level.
Very Sincerely,
Wayne Peterkin
