Obama bows again; this time to Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko as he arrived at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 (AP Photo).
Good grief is right, Nice Deb. I guess he didn’t learn anything from the last time. One more time….Americans do not bow to royalty, American Presidents do not bow before other heads of states and First Ladies should not be patting the Queen of England on the back either.
To boot, apparently President Obama didn’t even bow correctly. By shaking the Emperor’s hand while bowing he violated bowing etiquette (no touching).
“Unlike just about everyone who comes into the Emperor's presence, Obama obviously received no instruction on Imperial etiquette.”
“Another fundamental precept of the ordinary bow: it must be reciprocated. To do otherwise is a grave insult. Yet, we see in this short video clip that the Emperor did not even nod his head.”
What a disgrace. Giving the Saudi King a deep bow was not a rookie mistake, it was intentional and now becoming a disturbing pattern. This kind of change is not acceptable behavior.
I could only imagine what Gibbs will say on Monday.
