Full Disclosure: I am a conservative Independent 73-year-old retired Air Force officer with three years education beyond the master’s degree who has lived all over the U.S. and much of the world and served in critical air defense assignments.
I am new to Michigan and to the Journal ERA Newspaper and liberal Democrat columnist Lyndon G. Furst. After reading just a few of Mr. Furst’s columns, I feel compelled to correct his misperceptions about the permanent decline of the Republican Party.
The defeat of Republicans in the 2006 and 2008 elections resulted from them acting like Democrats and abandoning their conservative roots. Republicans started spending money, engaging in corruption, increasing the size of government, and catering to “victim groups” just like Democrats.
People like Arlan Specter, Colin Powell, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and even John McCain were the Republicans In Name Only that contributed to the problem along with the unanswered vicious and hateful attacks by Democrats, media, and academics.
Republicans will remain in the minority only until the American people finally realize that Barack Obama is a fraud and a Marxist who has joined with the left-wing Democrat House and Senate in creating an American disaster. In just the few short months of the Obama administration, Americans are in greater danger from terrorists and in deeper debt than at any time in our history.
Americans will turn to the reformed Republicans as the only conservative alternative for the basic center-right political philosophy of U.S. politics. This conservative transformation will occur when Americans start looking and listening critically to what Obama and other Democrats are saying and doing and comparing the golden words with the real world. The epiphany could occur suddenly with a serious terrorist attack or gradually as the debt-induced rise in inflation and interest rates reach Carter-era levels.
The nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Suppreme Court is an excellent example of the impending Democrat disaster. Sonia Sotomayor, the “Wise Latina,” is a left-wing activist judge, a racist, sexist, leader of the anti-American and radical La Raza, and a supporter of affirmative action that has ruled as a judge to discriminate against white males. Anyone with her philosophy and record is unfit to be a judge on any court.

I have to take issue with your somewhat optimistic view that Americans will somehow awaken from their complacency and somnolesence in the kind of numbers required to restore the Constitutional Republic of the United States. If they do, not when, I believe that such a realization will be a forced reaction to outright tyranny and despotism, at which time it will be far too late to take any corrective action besides fleeing the country and then of course, where would one go?
