I think that I am just gut-sick and fed up with the whole "political class". The Democrats spend like drunken sailors when they are in power, and the Republicans rail against "fiscal irresponsibility". But then the Republicans get the reigns (or perhaps in this instance, the pursestrings) and spend just as uncontrollably as the Democrats, who are suddenly outraged at balooning deficits. Members of both parties never met a piece of legislation so reprehensible to their morals or common sense that they weren't willing to add their own earmark to it! Each party backs it's own members in the face of horrible scandals (chasing pages, frozen cash, cheating on everything from wives to taxes to ethics standards...you pick), assuring the public that their man is "only human", that he/she "made an honest mistake", and it doesn't matter anyway because the whole affair is the result of "grandstanding" or a "political witch-hunt" by the opposing party!
It is useless here to scream "TERM LIMITS", and counterproductive to boot. Most members of the House or Senate would have an easier time sawing off their own arm than voting to impose term limits on themselves. It's simply not going to happen. Period. It would be counterproductive because it would require a constitutional amendment, and I find that my digestion works best the farther our legislators stay from The Constitution! I think the solution is a grassroots effort to get a significant percentage of the population to simply refuse to vote for any incumbent regardless of party affiliation. This would accomplish two things. First, it would "throw the bums out", many of them anyway, by circumnavigating district gerrymandering and campaign finance "reform" designed to keep the powerful in power (and anyone not successfully thrown out would have the s*** scared out of them!). Second, it would force the electorate to think about candidates and issues, to pick someone based on their stated beliefs rather than if they had a D or an R after their name. In short, it would force the electorate to become generally mare educated, a worthy goal for any cause.
I do realize that there would be a certain element of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater", there are a few good Senators and Representatives, and it would be a shame to have to get rid of them. However, that would be a small price to pay to get rid of even half of the s***-birds and asshats, ad put the fear of God into those that remain.
