Earl Lofland
Earl Lofland For United States Congress
"What, Sir, is the use of a militia?
It is to prevent the establishment
of a standing army, the bane of liberty. ...
Whenever Governments mean to invade
the rights and liberties of the people,
they always attempt to destroy the militia,
in order to raise an army upon their ruins."
-Elbridge Gerry
(1744-1814) of Massachusetts, Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Member of the Constitutional Convention. Spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment, I Annals of Congress at 750, August 17, 1789
As well as a a Court Decision.
The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers delegated directly to the citizen, and is excepted out of the general powers of government. A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking power.
Cockrum v. State 24 Texas 394 (1859)
An armed society is a polite society" from Robert Heinlein's novel Beyond This Horizon.
